MERRY CHRISTMAS! 🎄 Or is it?

It definitely is for the UK economy, this gift-buying season is filled with overconsumption and a LOT of spending, with an estimated industry value of £42 billion in the UK alone.

Although this is awesome for the economy, environmentalists argue that Christmas is an environmental disaster.

We consume 80% more food during Christmas. Per household, we spend an average of over £174 on food for just one day. We bin 230,000 tonnes of uneaten food.

Don’t get tempted by all of the supermarket offers. Come on now, do you really need that many mince pies?

In the UK 8 million trees are cut down each year for Christmas… The carbon footprint of a real tree is less than a plastic tree. However, if you reuse it every year then it’ll end up being more environmentally friendly.

The best option is to go tree-less. A friend of mine made a tree using her books and Christmas cards and it looks amazing!

All the pretty packaging and wrapping paper is tossed aside generating over 125,000 tonnes of plastic per year (Not so merry for our oceans). By March, children will have broken or gotten bored of 41% of toys bought for them.

Switching to standard paper that can go straight in the recycling bin is much better for the environment.
